Dentures

What are dentures?

Dentures are a type of oral prosthetic used to replace some or all of your missing teeth. They also provide support for your gums, tongue, and lips, which helps maintain your facial structure.

If you lose permanent teeth as a result of tooth decay, gum disease, or an illness, it’s important to take action. Oral prosthetics don’t just boost your confidence, they also lower your risk of gum recession, bone decay, and prevent your healthy teeth from moving out of place.

Are there different types of dentures?

At Yampa Valley Family Dentistry, the team offers several different types of dentures, including:

Conventional dentures

Conventional dentures replace all of your permanent teeth. They usually feature a full row of artificial teeth on top of a pink plastic, acrylic, or metal base. Conventional dentures sit directly on top of your gums and require a denture adhesive.

Immediate dentures

If you need to have teeth extracted, your Yampa Valley Family Dentistry provider might recommend immediate dentures. Your dentist fabricates and places these dentures immediately following your extractions. These dentures act as a temporary prosthesis until your gums fully heal.

Partial dentures

Your Yampa Valley Family Dentistry provider might recommend partial dentures if you have some healthy permanent teeth. Partial dentures sit on top of a wireframe and snap into place around your remaining teeth. They’re removable and easy to clean and care for.

Implant-supported dentures

If you hate taking out your dentures all the time and don’t like using sticky adhesives, you may want to consider implant-supported dentures. Implant-supported dentures connect to dental implants, small metal posts your dentist surgically places into the sockets of your missing teeth. Implant-supported dentures are the sturdiest and longest-lasting denture solution.

Are dentures right for me?

To determine if you’re a good candidate for dentures, make an appointment at Yampa Valley Family Dentistry. Following an oral exam, review of your medical history, and discussion of your goals for treatment, your dentist can make recommendations that align with your individual needs and goals.

How do I care for my dentures?

If you want your dentures to last for years to come, make sure you take good care of them. This means rinsing them in cool tap water after meals, brushing them at least once every day with toothpaste and a soft-bristle toothbrush, and soaking them overnight in a denture-cleaning solution.

You should also schedule regular appointments at Yampa Valley Family Dentistry. This allows your dentist to check for disease or changes affecting your oral tissues.
